Measuring a custom sisal stair runner is as easy as ABC.  All of our natural fiber, sisal wool and indoor/outdoor area rug collections can be made into custom sized runners to fit any staircase.  Stair runners help reduce noise and echoing of footsteps on stairs, especially on staircases that are near bedrooms.  Below you will find the steps you need to take to insure you order the perfect sized stair runner.

Step 1: Measure the width (A) of the stair.  Our standard runner widths are 24” & 28”; however we can custom make any stair runner to your exact custom measurements (ex. 27” or 30”).  Typically, customers leave a few inches on either side of the width so the runner does not cover the entire stair, leaving some of the woodwork or tiling exposed.  Write this down as your total width.

Step 2: Measure the Stair Riser height (B) from the bottom to the lip of the step.  Write this down as your riser measurement.

Step 3: Measure the Stair Depth (C) remembering to measure around the lip to the top of the riser.  Write this down as your riser measurement.

Step 4: Count how many Stair Risers (B) you have.

Step 5: Count how many Stair Depths (C) you have to cover.

Step 6: Multiply the number of risers (step 4) by the height of the stair riser (step 2).

Step 7: Multiply the number of Stair Depths (step 5) by the stair depth measurement (step 3).

Step 8: Add the totals from Step 6 and Step 7 together to give you the total length of the runner.

**Tip- Many of our customers request their stair runners not be bound on the top and bottom widths of the rugs.  This is the “seam” and either meets the floor or the last lip of the stair.  Please leave us a message in the comments section of the checkout page if you have any special requests.**

Durability of Sisal

1/25/13 10:20 AM

Sisal is a natural fiber that comes from the Agave sisalana plant and is known for its tough and durable qualities.  The agave sisalana plant is so durable that no drought has killed the Tanzanian sisal plants in over a century of commercial production.  The sisal natural fiber is stronger than other types of common natural fibers used to make area rugs such as hemp grass, coir and jute.  In fact it is used to make marine rope for large ships.

Sisal rugs are recommended for high-traffic areas and commercial use because of the inherent durability, which makes them ideal for use inside the home!  Our area rugs are especially durable because of the high quality latex backing that is applied to the backside of each rug.  This helps keep the integrity of the sisal rugs weave and prolongs the life of the rug.  One thing to remember when choosing a sisal rug is that they should not be used in areas where the rug will be exposed to direct moisture.  Moisture can cause the sisal to become wavy and water stained.  For small liquid spills, use our Sisal Life Protecotrant.  This product helps repel water, resist liquid spills and retard soiling. Sisal Life is recommended for all natural fiber rugs.  This can be applied at time of purchase by us or is available in a 22oz bottle.

Please use our guides to help build the perfect custom sisal hallway runner, stair runner or bedroom rug while resting assured that the natural sisal fibers used are of the highest quality and will last a long time.  To view our complete collection of sisal area rugs please click here!

Natural fiber area rugs make a great addition to any bedroom, but sometimes choosing the correct size can be difficult for our customers.  This tip sheet, complete with diagrams, will help you determine what size area rug will work best for your bedroom space.

  • Balancing the area rug under the bed is important.  Depending on the room size there can be more extension of the rug around the bed than suggested but not less.  Extending less means most of the rug is covered by the bed, which can make the rug look insignificant.
    • King and Queen beds: The natural fiber area rug should be large enough to extend at least 18” beyond the sides of the bed.
    • Twin and Full beds: The area rug should be large enough to extend at least 14” beyond the sides of the bed.
  • To keep from walking on a cold, hard floor in the morning, make sure to cover the areas where you step when getting up.  Our natural sisal wool rugs turn a cold floor into an inviting place to walk.
  • For larger bedrooms choose larger area rugs.  Doing so can help create a more intimate feeling in a big room.
  • Do not place area rugs over electrical floor outlets or air vents.
  • Regular maintenance and rotation of the rug are suggested.

How To Clean A Jute Rug

HOW TO CLEAN A JUTE RUG

Jute rugs are very popular due to their soft feel underfoot and the durability they provide.  The majority of our Jute rugs are undyed giving them the natural tonal variation customers seek out.   Jute rugs are relatively easy to maintain because the dirt does not cling to the fibers, but rests loosely in the weave.

Regular Vacuuming: This is the best thing that can be done to keep your Jute rug clean and looking new.  Loose and visible dirt should be vacuumed making several passes in various directions with a strong-brush suctioned vacuum.  NEVER USE THE BEATER BAR WHEN CLEANING A JUTE RUG!

**Frequent and regular vacuuming will increase the life of natural fiber rugs by preventing soil build-up, and will help eliminate stains caused when spilled liquids dissolve soil accumulations.**

Spot Cleaning: Immediately remove any spills on your Jute rug by blotting liquids with a white cloth.  Never rub the area of the spill. Rubbing can work the liquid deeper into the jute fibers, spread the spill and make it more likely to stain the jute rug.

**For red wine and tomato sauce spills on a Jute rug, dab the jute rug using a white cloth dampened with club soda to neutralize the spill and remove any possible stain. Let dry. Many times the stain disappears. If not, try cleaning with a cloth dampened with mild soap, or use our Sisal Life Cleaner. Dry immediately with a hairdryer or fan.**

It is important to control the amount of moisture during cleaning of your Jute rug. NEVER steam clean, wet shampoo or any other method that involves water saturation on a Jute rug. It is recommended that a dry cleaning process be used. We carry a Host Cleaning Kit for your convenience. It cleans up to a 250 sq. ft. area. Host is a low moisture powder (they call them sponges) that absorbs dirt that can then be vacuumed away.
