Solutions for Crowded Entryways
In the February issue of Cabin Life magazine offers Tips to shape up crowded cabin entryways. These tips can apply to any type of entryways.
1. Take Stock: Think about what you need handy -keys, dog leashes, jackets, gloves, hats. Only keep current season clothing and gear by the door.
2. Strategize: Use what you already have; an old hutch, table or bench. Look online and in catalogs for the rest.
3. Divide & Conquer: If your entryway opens into your living area or great room, create a wall with a sideboard or chest of drawers perpendicular to the door.
4. Illuminate: You need good lighting to help you find things. Try track lighting or pendant fixtures. A mirror is always a good idea to take a peek at yourself before you go out the door.
5. Look Up: Make use of vertical spaces - use hooks on walls to save floor space.
6. Think Durable: Especially for flooring. An entryway needs to withstand the elements - flooring should be hardwearing and natural use tile, slate or stone.
7. Trap, Corral and Protect : Sturdy rugs or mats made from sisal or seagrass are perfect for entryway rugs. They protect the floor and trap sand and dirt.
8. Personalize: Introduce yourself and your family to your guests by showing off your hobbies, activities, interests or your style in the entryway. If you ski – show off your skis,if your stye is rustic -use northwoods decorative items like birchwood baskets to store items. Seagrass baskets are natural containers for coastal retreats.

In the premier episode “Loads of Layers vs. Less is More” of the new HGTV show “Showhouse Showdown” the Layers won. Loads of Layers vs. Less is More -
Based on the Irish format by the same name, Showhouse Showdown is a competition between two professional interior designers who take over two newly-built and identical homes or townhomes with identical budgets to create a winning interior design. At the end of each episode one designer is voted the winner by members of the public who represent the developer’s target market.
In Stone Ridge, Virginia, within commuting distance of our nation's capital, Alexandria designer Shazalynn Cavin-Winfrey takes on Washington, D.C. designer Eric Kole, leading to a huge clash of design styles as well as their totally opposite personalities. Working in matching model homes, with two completely different approaches to the same five rooms, these highly competitive designers have one week to complete a dining room, rec room, master bedroom, living room and a challenging combination kitchen-family room. Then, potential buyers from around Northern Virginia tour the finished homes, which could not be more different looking, and their votes pick the winner of this Showhouse Showdown.
We're voting for Shazlalynn Cavin-Winfrey. See who wins on the premier show, Monday, September 12th at 10 pm and 1 am EST.

Natural-fiber rugs, a staple of home décor
The Washington Post 4/21/11 By Jura Koncius
Sisal rugs have become the jeans of home decor. You can dress them up, dress them down and layer them. And you can afford them.
Sisals, as well as cousins sea grass, jute and other natural-fiber rugs, have been around for centuries in tropical islands and country homes. In the 1980s, these crisp floor coverings showed up in America’s living rooms, stairways and foyers. They never left.
Alexandria designer Shazalyn Cavin-Winfrey is drawn to the cooler, grayer colors of natural fibers these days. She prefers the chunkier weaves. “They look updated,” she says. Right now, she’s having a greige thickly woven sisal installed wall-to-wall in her family room. (She is using the Sunshade color from the Sun Sisal collection at Sisal Rugs Direct).
