When buying a rug, many people focus on the type of fiber, color and texture, but few think of the binding. The binding is a crucial part of the rug but can sometimes come with a hefty price tag depending on the material, which leaves some people questioning if they really need it on their rug. Although different quality bindings could increase the price of a rug, they serve an important purpose that shouldn’t be overlooked.

All of our rugs are made to order so the main purpose of a rug binding is longevity. An unbound rug will unravel over time and quickly lose its beauty, shape, texture and durability as the loose fibers fall apart. Rug bindings, however, prevent fraying and ensure the rug stays in top condition as along as possible.

On top of a binding’s practical purposes, it can also contribute to a room’s aesthetic. A binding keeps the rug looking clean and sharp, which in turn makes the room appear neat and organized. In contrast, an unbound rug with fraying edges will give a messy, unruly impression.

A binding’s color and material can also play an important part in a room’s overall look. To achieve the look of having the rug be unbound or borderless choose the Serging binding.  Serging only shows 5/8” on the face of the rug and can be matched to blend with the rug color.  With a variety of colors and patterns available in all binding styles, a rug and its binding can be customized to fit any room’s design scheme.

Sisal Rugs has multiple binding materials, colors and stitching available. Browse the Bindings Page to discover the benefits of each style.
