Bedroom rugs are both a stylish and practical solution for your space. Indeed, the right rug will visually pull the room together, but it’s more than that.

An area rug isn’t just a feast for the eyes. Rugs can help create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. They're also a delight to toes, especially on cold mornings. And, since bedroom rugs offer excellent sound absorption, dampening the sounds of foot traffic, they're a treat for ears that are used to hearing the groans of floorboards or activity in nearby rooms. Plus, they protect your hardwood floor against wear and tear. So, your wallet will thank you somewhere down the line.

But with so many choices, how can a person possibly choose? Read on for bedroom rug ideas and learn how to select the best rug that transforms your bedroom into a space where you can relax and de-stress.

How to Choose the Best Bedroom Rug to Match Your Style

Your bedroom should be your personal sanctuary, so make sure that your choice of rug delivers the right kind of vibes. What do you want to see when you wake up in the morning? What will bed accentuate your bedroom furniture? What type of rug will make you happy for years to come?

Neutral rugs are the best bet for large bedrooms.

Consider your room's style first and find a rug to enhance the look. Natural colors can create a simple, sophisticated style. If your room is big, neutral-colored carpets are your best bet. However, you can inject your personal flair by adding a distinct edging to your carpet. We offer dozens of edging options in cotton, linen, leather, and faux leather so you can match the border color of the rug with your decor. We can even use your provided material for the edging, so the rug coordinates perfectly with the rest of your bedroom.

However, if you are designing for a smaller room or using runners, patterned rugs can add a dose of extra personality without being overwhelming.

The Optimal Materials for a Bedroom Rug

Rugs come in a variety of materials, including wool, natural fibers, and synthetic blends—each with different advantages. No one rug material is right for everyone. When choosing a bedroom rug, you’ll want to consider texture, durability, and maintenance. Below we offer several bedroom rug ideas.

3 Soft and Durable Bedroom Rug Ideas

1. Most people want their bedroom rugs to be both soft and durable. For a soft rug that’s pet-friendly, consider a soft sisal rug or blend of wool and sisal. They are incredibly durable and easy to maintain. The bumpy texture of the carpet makes it easy to spot-clean away muddy paw prints and spilled drinks.

A soft sisal rug is a great choice for a bedroom rug for its beauty and durability.

2. Another soft and cozy choice is a wool rug. Wool is durable, naturally resistant to dust mites and fires, and relatively stain-resistant. But it can take a little work to remove dark stains. So if you fancy a glass of red wine in bed, this might not be best for you.

3. A polypropylene rug is an additional choice that checks all the boxes—they are soft, durable, and easy to maintain. Plus, they are less likely to slip and slide on your bedroom’s hardwood floor. (But we still recommend pairing any rug with a rug pad. More on that below.)

The Right Size Rug For Your Room and Your Bed

But what size area rug do you need? Good question!

Before you buy a bedroom rug, decide where you want to place it. One goal, of course, is to have enough rug around your bed to keep you from walking on a cold, hard floor in the morning. So, it’s no wonder that when it comes to rug sizes for bedrooms, a lot of it depends on the size of your bed.

Underneath the bed is a common spot. If you want to place a rug underneath the bed, choose a large enough size so that the rug extends out on all three sides. If you have a king or a queen bed, plan at least 18 to 24 inches on all sides; for smaller mattresses, 14 inches may be enough. And, of course, if you have a trunk or bench at the foot of your bed, make sure you include them in your measurements.

For smaller rooms where space may be limited, just ensure that the rug extends beyond the end of the bed. Another option is to use runners at the sides and the bottom of the bed.

Suggested Rug Size Based on Bed Size

  • King: 9’ x 12’+

  • Queen: 8’ x 10’

  • Full: 6’ x 9’

  • Twin: 5’ x 8’

One trick is to use masking tape or a bed sheet to mark out the size of the rug you are considering. Of course, if your room or its layout isn’t standard, you might be left with oddly shaped spaces in you use a standard rug size.  When shopping with Sisal Rugs Direct, our custom area rugs are always cut to size—and can even accommodate room features such as fireplaces—so you always get the perfect fit.

Maximize Comfort and Longevity with a Rug Pad

Longevity, comfort, and safety are three benefits of using a rug pad. Purchasing a pad for your area rug or runners protects both the floor and the rugs, so they continue to look their best. Plus, the added cushion makes the rug more comfortable to stand, sit, or roll around on.

Some rugs—like wool —can also slip around on slick floors like hardwood. Your bed will weigh down your area rug, but if you opt for runners, a rug pad can help ensure that a quick trip to the bathroom doesn’t result in a long fall to the floor.
