Carpet & Rug Backing Descriptions

Rug Backing Options

The material that is attached to the back of a rug is called the rug backing. The type of material that is chosen to back a rug varies depending on the type of fibers the rug is made of and the manufacturer.  Rug backings can help with stability of the rug weave but are not necessary on all types of rugs.

We have put together a guide showing each of the backings you will find available on our rugs and carpet.  Read below for descriptions of the rug and carpet backings we offer.

Natural Latex Backing

1 1

Natural latex is made of rubber tree sap.  The back of the rug is covered with the rubber and either baked on or left to air dry.  This backing is mostly applied for the stability of the weave to keep it straight, but it can act as a non-skid surface.  Keep in mind that with the large number of different flooring finishes and cleaners it is possible the backing can react with the floor, causing it to flake or stick.  Depending on your flooring type of finish a rug pad between the rug and floor might be recommended.

Jute Backing

1 1

Jute rug backings are made from jute fibers processed from the fibrous jute plant. The fibers are then shredded and spun into yarn or weft. Jute is the most common type of natural fiber used in carpet backings. Woven jute rug backings are soft, strong and durable. Jute does not provide a non-skid surface, therefore a rug pad is recommended if the rug is laid in an area it could shift.

No Backing (Unbacked)

1 1

Our polypropylene (outdoor sisal) rugs do not have any backing.  This allows for good airflow through the rug.  For indoor outdoor sisal rugs that do not have a backing a rug pad is recommended and is required if the rug is laid in a place where it can move when walked on.  If anchored by furniture a pad is not necessary but does offer cushioning and prolongs the life of the rug.

Felt Backing

1 1

Felt rug backing is glued to the rug. Felt backings do allow for good air flow.  They help with soundproofing, offer a thicker cushion to prolong the life of the rug and are safe for all types of floors and finishes.  Carpet with felt backing can be laid directly to the floor or subsurface.  This backing does not provide grip to the floor.  If the rug is in an area where it can shift a rug pad is recommended.

Action Backing

1 1

Action backing is a type of rug and carpet backing that is made of woven synthetic fibers.  The backing improves sound dampening, improves durability and prolongs the life of the rug.  The backing provides stability and structure to the rug weave.  We offer action backing on both indoor and outdoor rugs.  Action backing on a rug does not provide a non-slip surface.  A rug pad is recommended for use under action backed rugs.

Cotton Backing

1 1

A cotton backing is an environmentally friendly choice for a rug backing. It allows for good air flow underneath the rug.   Rug pads are recommended if a cotton backed rug is being used in a place where it could shift.
