Avoid These 5 Mistakes When Ordering Your Custom Rug
Thinking about a custom rug? We don’t blame you! The right rug transforms a nice looking space into a stunning setting.
For some people, though — especially first-time buyers — ordering a custom rug can be stressful. Maybe you’re worried you’ll make a mistake. Maybe you’re worried your custom rug won’t look exactly how you dreamed it would.
If that sounds relatable, don’t worry: we get it, and we appreciate your attention to detail.
Let’s do a quick rundown of five common custom rug mistakes so you can place your order with total confidence.

Additionally, one of the most common mistakes people make when DIY-ing a custom rug order is choosing a rug size that’s too large or too small. A rug that’s too large can overwhelm the space. A rug that’s too small can make the space feel lacking.
With our free design consultation service, you don’t have to worry about that. Our designers will help you find the shape and dimensions that fit your space perfectly.
Mistake #2: Not ordering a free sample or swatch
If anyone understands your desire to choose the right rug, it’s us. That’s why we offer free samples — so you can see your rug up close and see if it complements your space perfectly.
So please, order a few samples. Feel the fibers between your fingers. Step on them with your bare feet. Lay them in your space and see how they look in every type of light, at every time of day.
Order free rug samples in three easy steps:
- Design your rug: Create your rug on the collection page. When selecting the rug type, choose the “Free Samples” option.
- Choose your samples: Order samples of the rug material, the binding, or both. Experiment away! Create multiple rugs with different combinations and order samples to compare.
- Preview your rug: Rug material samples are approximately 6” x 6” and cut directly from the same roll as our rugs. Binding samples are about 1” and let you see the exact finish. The first four samples are on us. After that, it’s $1.50 per sample.
For example, if you’ve decided on a rug material but want to compare bindings, simply create a new rug with your chosen binding color, click “Order Sample,” and select the “Binding Sample” option.
Need a bigger sample before you decide? To get an even better sense of the final product, you can opt for a 12” by 12” sample and have it bound, giving you a true preview of how the finished rug will look in your space.
Mistake #3: Not carefully checking customization options for colors and borders
Already know what you want? Awesome!
Before placing your order, though, double-check all of your specifications to make sure they’re exactly what you have in mind. Borders made from different materials come in different colors, so make sure your border is the material, width, and color you want.

If you haven’t seen a sample, we also encourage you to read through the specifications, including use and care, to ensure the thickness, construction, backing, and usage details match your expectations. Do one last check to make sure the color, shape, dimensions, and binding details are exactly how you want them, then place your order and allow yourself to be overcome with joy.
If you have any questions whatsoever, even if you just want to be absolutely sure about your order, we encourage you to use our free design consultation service, order free samples, or give us a call so we can walk you through your order.
Mistake #4: Not considering foot traffic and rug pads
When choosing a custom rug, yes — it’s important to consider how it complements your space. But it’s just as important to consider how it complements your lifestyle. That rug with the soft, luxurious fibers might look and feel superb, but it may not be the most durable or convenient choice for an area with high foot traffic.
If you’re placing a rug in a high-traffic area, consider a performance rug. Another option is to use outdoor rugs in indoor spaces. Again, our expert designers can help you find fibers, weaves, and patterns that work perfectly for your space and situation.
Our designers and support staff can also help you choose the right rug pad. Rug pads protect you and your loved ones from slipping and sliding on smooth floors. They also protect your investment because they:
- Prevent furniture from scratching and denting your floors
- Absorb friction from foot traffic
- Keep dirt from grinding into fibers
- Improve air circulation
- Make the rug easier to clean
- Improve plushness and comfort
